The Big Island in Hawaii

Hawaii proper, or the Big Island, was the former home to Kamehameha the Great, who united the majority of the Hawaiian Islands. He gave his kingdom the name of his native island, which is why we now call all the islands Hawaii.

The island of Hawaii is well known for it's volcanoes, with Kilauea being active now for more than twenty-five years. The area where the land meets the sea, the lava often produces large white billowing clouds of steam. This phenomena is one of the main reasons that the islands is home to many black sand beaches.

The Big Island is also home to lush botanical gardens, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, museums and the popular Mauna Kea Observatory.
